It is that time of year again. The much-anticipated summer is upon us and many people are looking forward to outdoor fun. The highways will be crowded with vacation travelers and bicycle riders will comb the neighborhood streets.

Bike riding is an activity that is popular among people of all ages.   It is a great way to enjoy the outdoors while reaping the benefits of exercise. Like any other activity, bike riding poses dangers that could result in accidents and injuries. Those riding bikes face a higher risk of serious injury or death if involved in a crash than those involved in accidents with motor vehicles.

Teenagers and adults over the age of 45 are among the groups at the greatest risk for getting injured or killed in a bicycle accident. Moreover, male riders are much more likely to be hurt than females. Every year, over a half a million emergency rooms are visited by those who have been injured while riding bicycles.

Bicycle Safety Measures

Bicyclists should adhere to the following safety suggestions in order to prevent serious or fatal injury:

  • Know the rules of the road and adhere to those rules. If you are going on a long ride, look for places that have bicycle paths and make sure to use them.
  • Wear a helmet. Although bike helmet laws vary from state to state, wearing a helmet greatly reduces the risk of brain injuries during a crash. Make sure that all children who are riding a bicycle while in your care wear helmets, too.
  • While riding during the day, wear clothing that is easily visible from far away. Bright, fluorescent colors tend to work best.
  • While riding at night, make sure that your bicycle is equipped with proper lighting in the front and back, and consider wearing reflective clothing or gear.
  • Before riding, check to see that your bike is in good working order. Tires should be full of air and braking devices must be checked.

Adhering to some simple safety measures could mean the difference between enjoying a beautiful day or being part of a tragedy that could cause great pain and suffering for those involved in New Jersey bicycle accidents.
